Events that help support Moms and Dads who have lost Children

The Month of October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

During this month there are many events that take place to help support families and educate people on the importance of understanding those of us who lost a pregnancy or infant.

There is a stigma surrounding this topic that most don’t want to talk about. However if we don’t talk about it then people will not understand those who have loss and how they can help us going forward. Below is what every grieving mother needs from those who do not know what to do or what to say when someone they know has lost a pregnancy or infant.

Please use this as a guide when talking to someone you know who has lost a child. This is a friendly reminder of what will help us going forward!

OCTOBER 15TH

Light a Candle: On October 15 at 7PM local time, Please light a candle in memory of the babies who have been lost, say a prayer for the families or something sweet to remember the babies who are no longer with us.

Participate in moments of Silence: Join in Moments of reflection and silence to honor and remember the lives of babies who have passed away.

Share your story: If you have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, consider sharing your story to offer comfort and support to others who may be going through a similar experience. I can tell you this is a powerful thing to do and its brave.

Attend supportive Events: Participate in local events, memorial services or online gatherings that focus on pregnancy and infant loss awareness. Check out your local churches and support groups that hold events to honor. Below I have listed a few that are nationally and local for South Carolina.

Offer Compassion- Be there for friends and loved ones who have experienced loss. We need to know you care and that you remember our babies who are no longer with us. Say their names, they did exist.

Support Grief Counseling Services- contribute to organizations that provide grief counseling and support services for those who are affected by pregnancy or infant loss. I will list free therapy options for those who need extra support and love.

National Events:

The Cooper Project

The Cooper Project is an organization that supports pregnancy and infant loss. They create special pink and blue bracelets that help raise awareness by wearing them during the month of October as well as year round. When you wear this bracelet you are able to spread awareness to those who do not know what those colors represent and educate them on the importance of recognizing those who have gone through pregnancy and infant loss.

Visit The Cooper Project for ways you can help support and join in the awareness for all of us that have lost.

1 in 4 women have suffered a loss- this organization creates a great way to bring support and awareness to topics that are not talked about.

Let’s stop the stigma against Pregnancy and Infant Loss and Talk about it

Local events in Charleston South Carolina:

Walk of Remembrance: Miles for Margaret, Lydia and All Babies Gone Too Soon

This special walk is organized by two strong mothers who lost their babies and wanted to give back to a local organization and support other moms who have lost a pregnancy or infant. It’s a yearly walk, dedicated to supporting the Count the Kicks Organization, where they educate expecting mothers on the importance of feeling their babies movements and kick counts. All proceeds from this walk go to this national organization which will help educate and provide resources for expecting mothers.

The walk takes place to honor babies who have died due to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, Neonatal or Infant Loss. This walk is special to my family and I. The walk takes place in the Charleston Area, normally at a local park. You can register to walk as an individual or as a team. My team is called OURREMEDI, and we welcome you every year to help us raise money and awareness for Count the Kicks. We are dedicated to support this local cause and support moms who have or are going through this tragedy.

Prior to the walk they have a ceremony where they will welcome all who have joined the walk, read the names of all our babies gone too soon as well as provide arts and crafts, music and support for mothers and their families. Registration starts in September and the walk is normally at the end of October or early November.
